Completion of arming, fuzing and firing assembly precedes first full W88 Alt 370. ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Sandia National Laboratories and its nuclear security enterprise partners recently completed the first production unit of a weapon assembly responsible for key operations of the W88 nuclear warhead.
Most images I've seen demonstrate the cross section of the primary being an ordinary ellipse with two axes of symmetry (e.g. the gray warhead in the first image), but one particular image (the purple warhead in the second image) shows the primary as being an oval with only one axis of symmetry.
The W88 is a compact, thermonuclear warhead developed in the 1970s having a maximum yield of 475 kiloton and intended to fit into MIRVed intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM) such as the US Navy's Trident II.
The W88 Alt 370 to modernize the warhead primarily included an updated AF&F assembly and a refresh of the conventional high explosive.
